HootSuite’s Follower Insights Privacy Issue

UPDATE:

HootSuite have added an opt-out of Insights option, now you can turn of insights and block your social profiles from displaying within the HootSuite UI.

#######

Some of you will have noticed that HootSuite (which I love and think is a great service) added Follower Insights on July 13th 2010.

Follower Insights

Get to know your network with the knowledge behind the “Insights” tab. Learn where your contacts hang-out online including publicly available links to social profiles, a collection of images, even occupations and title — all in one view.”

For most users this isn’t an issue, they probably welcome the ability to view what social networks other users belong too, and for some users they will see this as an invasion of their privacy.

However, for me follower insights puts me in a bit of a predicament, i.e. clients follows me on twitter, notices that I have a Facebook account and submits a friend request. I’m not going to accept the friend request and they will wonder why and possibly hold this against me.  I know the information is freely available online, but its the principle of the matter, allow me to share my information or at least give me an option not to share third-party information.

Since the birth of my children I have new rules for accepting connections via social sites, they are as follows…

  1. Facebook – Friends and very close acquaintances only - No Clients or Acquaintances. This is a personal place were I chat to friends and family.
  2. Twitter – open to anyone that wants to follow me (I also use a business account which is a professional account)
  3. LinkedIn – Clients can connect with me here.

There was uproar when Google launched Buzz, because of the privacy issues surrounding the controversial “auto-follow” feature. Then again with Facebook, which came under fire for recent changes to its policies that have limited what users can keep

To the best of my knowledge HootSuite didn’t ask my permission to display links to third-party sites (it could well be in the T&C’s). If they did or did not there are still lots of inaccuracies that need to be addressed…

  1. My last name has a small n and no ‘ after the O - nit picky yes, but its correct above in the title bar.
  2. It says I live in Detroit Michigan, which is untrue.
  3. It says I am a Regional Account Manager for 352 – which is untrue, I got laid off in Apr 09 from my full time position.
  4. It says I am the Principal of 352, which is again untrue (what if my old boss saw this and wondered why I am suggesting I and the principal of his company).
  5. It has a link to Match.com, I am not a member of this site, so why is it displayed under my insight profile.

HootSuite in my opinion should have emailed their users before hand and advised they would be adding “Follower Insights” (they might have but I didn’t see or read the email) advising of the upcoming changes, and offered a opt in / opt out button. Even better would be a check box option to show which services you wanted to display – but as I understand it, it’s all or nothing.

UPDATE

I replied to the HootSuite blog yesterday, I get a reply from Dave Olson “We will have an opt-out form in the next day or two — just waiting on a bit of info to compete the form and tool. Thanks for your patience, we are working diligently to effectuate this change.”

I do think HootSuite is a great service, I love using it, and I hope they can get this issue fixed and not cause themselves too much trouble, but most of all learn from it.

Importance of Keyword Alerts for your Business

I came across a post a few days ago by my previous employer “Impact Web Design Makes a Big Impact With Our Graphics”. This post is about a web design company in Charlotte, NC, using custom graphics on their site, that are obviously the same as the graphics on 352′s website.

I do not want to get caught up in the back and forth of this issue – other than that to say using graphics without the owner’s permission is not right. However I do want to discuss the importance of keyword alerts for your business. It’s my opinion that if the Charlotte Web Design Company had keyword alerts set up, and/or were carefully monitoring them, they could address this issue very quickly.

Keyword Alerts are very important for your business, they allow you to keep track of what people are saying about your company online, whether it be good or bad. You can monitor keywords via a number of sites on the web such as Google and Twitter.

Google Alerts

Google Alerts are email updates of the latest relevant Google results (web, news, etc.) based on your choice of query or topic.

Google alerts are very easy to set up go to http://www.google.com/alerts (you must have a Google account). I would at very least set up a Google Alert with your Company Name, so you can stay on top of what the web community is saying about your company.

Twitter Alerts

You sign up and use a free service like http://tweetbeep.com/ – Keep track of conversations that mention you, your products, your company, anything, with hourly updates! You can even keep track of who’s tweeting your website or blog, even if they use a shortened URL (like bit.ly or tinyurl.com).

Read More Link after Blog Post Excerpt [...]

I was a little annoyed that the only default way from my main blog landing page, that users could continue reading my posts was to click on the blog title or the post image. I do not feel this was 100% user friendly or intuitive for the reader.

I needed to replace [...] at the end of the blog excerpt, with a link and some text that made sense such as “Read more” or Continue Reading”.

The problem:

Notice how the excerpt text ended with [...]

[...]

The Solution

Notice how the excerpt text now ends with …Continue Reading… which also links to the rest of the post.

What Are Sitelinks

The links shown below some sites in Google’s search results, called sitelinks, are meant to help users navigate your site. Google’s systems analyze the link structure of your site to find shortcuts that will save users time and allow them to quickly find the information they’re looking for.

Google only show sitelinks for results when they think they’ll be useful to the user. If the structure of your site doesn’t allow Google’s algorithms to find good sitelinks, or they don’t think that the sitelinks for your site are relevant for the user’s query, they do not show them.

How can a site that focuses on video or images improve its rankings?

Google Video, explaining how to improve your rankings if you use lots of video or images on your website.

Meta Keyword tags: Google say no, Yahoo say yes!

I was doing some research on  meta keyword tags, that I though I would share.

Google ignores keywords placed in the meta tag  – see Matt Cutt’s Google video with an explanation “Google does not use the keywords meta tag in web ranking

However its seems as though Yahoo take meta tag keywords into consideration, see link  How to Improve the Position of Your Website in Yahoo! Search Results

<quote>Use a “keyword” metatag to list keywords for each page of your website. Use distinct lists of keywords that relate to each specific page on the site. Do not use one broad set of keywords for the entire site.</quote> (Last Updated: December 15, 2009).

Bottom line – its not going to hurt your website if you include <meta name=”keywords” content=” ” />

Issues updating WordPress from Version 2.9.0 to 2.9.1

I was having issues updating WordPress from Version 2.9.0 to 2.9.1 via the core update functionality installed within WordPress’ admin.

I had a plug-in installed called Web Invoicing and Billing after I deactivated this plug-in, I was able to upgrade to the latest version of WordPress Successfully.

If you are having issues upgrading, try deactivate some plug-ins – 1 at a time, before you resort to a manual install.
